She is the first African artist to voice a character in the Pixar franchise, ahead of the film’s June 19 release.

South African music star Tyla is set to make Disney history after joining the cast of Toy Story 5, becoming the first African artist to voice a character in the iconic Pixar franchise.
The Grammy-winning singer will voice the Inflatable Flamingo in a version of the film tailored specifically for audiences across Sub-Saharan Africa, marking a significant milestone for African representation in global animation.
The casting forms part of Disney and Pixar’s broader localization strategy, which introduces region-specific voices in select markets as part of the film’s worldwide release. The move reflects growing efforts by major studios to connect with audiences through local talent and culturally relevant storytelling.
Tyla shared the announcement alongside Disney Africa on Instagram, encouraging fans to watch the film in cinemas with their families. The singer said the opportunity was especially meaningful because she grew up watching the beloved Toy Story franchise.
“Come and watch with your whole family because your girl Tyla is in the movie as the Inflatable Flamingo,” she told fans.
The South African star joins a cast that includes Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Tony Hale, Greta Lee, Conan O’Brien, Keanu Reeves, and Craig Robinson.
Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton, Toy Story 5 is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on June 19, adding another major international achievement to Tyla’s rapidly growing global career.
