South Africa (Running Africa) — At least 28 people have been killed and 25 others injured in two mass shootings near Johannesburg and Cape Town, as police launch separate investigations into the deadly attacks.

The first shooting happened at a tavern in Wedela, west of Johannesburg, on Saturday night, where eight armed men reportedly opened fire on patrons inside and outside the venue.

Eighteen people were killed and 14 others were injured.

Police said the gunmen also searched some victims for valuables before escaping in two vehicles. The vehicles were later found burnt.

Police Hunt Gunmen After Wedela Tavern Shooting

South African police have launched a manhunt for the Wedela attackers, but no arrests have been announced.

Investigators are examining possible links to armed robbery and rival groups involved in illegal mining. Police have not established a motive, and neither possibility has been confirmed as the reason for the attack.

Lwandle Shooting Kills 10 Near Cape Town

Hours after the Wedela attack, gunmen opened fire at an entertainment venue in Lwandle, near Cape Town, killing another 10 people and injuring 11.

Five victims died at the scene, while five others died while being transported to hospital, according to police.

No arrests have been reported in connection with the Lwandle shooting.

South Africa Faces Another Deadly Weekend of Gun Violence

The two attacks came days after 11 people were killed in a mass shooting in KwaMakhutha, south of Durban.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding that attack separately.

South Africa has long faced high levels of violent crime, with gang activity, armed robbery and organized criminal networks among the factors authorities investigate in some mass shootings.

In the latest attacks, however, police have yet to establish the motives or announce evidence linking the Wedela and Lwandle shootings.
