Durban, South Africa (Running Africa) — Eleven people have been killed and three others injured after three gunmen opened fire on a group gathered at a house in KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, police said.

The shooting happened on Tuesday night in the Ziko area of the KwaZulu-Natal township, where 14 people were reportedly attending a party.

Police said 10 victims died at the scene, including a woman believed to have been pregnant. An 11th victim later died in the hospital.

Police Hunt Three Suspects After KwaMakhutha Shooting

The motive for the attack has not been established, and investigators are searching for three suspects believed to have carried out the shooting.

Police said a dispute between rival groups is among several possibilities under investigation, but no motive has been confirmed.

The acting national police commissioner has ordered a 72-hour tracking operation to locate the suspects.

Preliminary investigations also indicated that some of those killed were known to Crime Intelligence in connection with alleged illegal activities. Police have not provided further details about those allegations or established whether they were connected to the shooting.

South Africa Faces Continued Mass Shooting Cases

The KwaMakhutha attack follows other mass-casualty shootings that have intensified concerns over gun violence in South Africa.

In June, 12 people were killed in a separate mass shooting in Cleveland, Johannesburg, prompting authorities to deploy additional specialized investigators.

Police have urged anyone with information about the KwaMakhutha shooting or the whereabouts of the three suspects to assist the investigation.

The manhunt remains underway as investigators work to establish the motive and circumstances behind the attack.
