Burkina Faso Trains Lawmakers to Strengthen Artificial Intelligence Policy and Governance

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (Running Africa) — Burkina Faso has taken another step toward strengthening its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy after the Ministry of Digital Transition trained around 30 lawmakers on AI to support digital governance and the development of future legislation.

The capacity-building program, organized by the Permanent Secretariat for Innovation and Forecasting on Emerging Digital Technologies (SPIVTEN), introduced legislators to AI fundamentals, practical applications and the regulatory challenges associated with the rapidly evolving technology.

Preparing Lawmakers for AI Policy Development

SPIVTEN Permanent Secretary Dr. Yaya Traoré said equipping lawmakers with a solid understanding of artificial intelligence is essential for developing a robust legal and regulatory framework that promotes innovation while safeguarding public interests.

He stressed that effective AI governance will require policymakers to understand both the opportunities and risks presented by emerging technologies.

Focus on Digital Sovereignty and AI Investment

Traoré also highlighted the importance of digital sovereignty, urging Burkina Faso to develop AI systems tailored to the country’s national priorities while strengthening protections for data privacy, cybersecurity and digital infrastructure.

He said achieving the country’s AI ambitions will require sustained investment in high-quality data, digital infrastructure, skilled professionals and AI-focused education, creating the foundation for long-term technological development.

Supporting Responsible AI Innovation

Participants said the training had enhanced their understanding of artificial intelligence and would help them develop legislation that encourages innovation while ensuring the responsible, ethical and secure use of AI.

The initiative reflects Burkina Faso’s growing commitment to building a modern digital economy and preparing its institutions for the increasing role of artificial intelligence in governance, public services and economic development.

As African countries continue to accelerate digital transformation, Burkina Faso’s investment in AI education for policymakers highlights the importance of creating regulatory frameworks that balance innovation with accountability and national development.
