Tanzanian opposition activist Twaha Mwaipaya remains missing after unidentified men reportedly intercepted his taxi in Machakos County, prompting calls for Kenyan authorities to find him.
Nairobi, Kenya – Running Africa: Human rights groups and Tanzanian opposition figures are demanding urgent action after activist Twaha Mwaipaya, a former CHADEMA youth official, was reported missing in Kenya on Sunday.
What happened to Twaha Mwaipaya
According to Amnesty International Kenya, Mwaipaya was traveling by taxi to visit friends in Kamulu, Machakos County, when three unidentified men intercepted the vehicle at about 2 p.m.
The men allegedly ordered the driver out before leaving with Mwaipaya.
A police report confirmed that he had been reported missing, although the circumstances of his disappearance remain unclear. His whereabouts remained unknown as of Monday.
Calls for Kenya to find Mwaipaya
CHADEMA has appealed to President William Ruto’s government to help locate Mwaipaya and ensure his safe return.
The Uganda Law Society also condemned the reported abduction. It said that if Tanzania has a case against him, it should use formal extradition procedures and guarantee his right to due process rather than bypassing Kenyan law.
Concerns over transnational repression in Kenya
The case has renewed concerns about alleged transnational repression in Kenya, following previous incidents involving Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye and Tanzanian activist Maria Sarungi Tsehai.
However, there is currently no publicly established evidence identifying Mwaipaya’s alleged abductors or linking Tanzanian authorities to his disappearance.
