At Least 60 Orthodox Christians Killed in Attacks in Ethiopia’s Oromia Region

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church says dozens of worshipers were killed in two attacks in Arsi Zone, while more than 20 others were seriously injured.

At least 60 Ethiopian Orthodox Christians have been killed in two attacks in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, according to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, which has called for stronger protection of civilians.

What the church says happened in Arsi Zone

The church’s Holy Synod said 14 people were killed in Merti district in the Arsi Zone on Oct. 20. Four days later, it said, another attack killed 46 people in Shirka district.

More than 20 people were seriously injured, and 20 homes were burned during the violence.

The church condemned the killings. It urged federal and regional authorities to investigate the attacks, bring those responsible to justice and take stronger measures to prevent further violence against civilians.

Who is responsible for the Oromia attacks

Oromia regional authorities said security forces were pursuing those responsible and pledged action against the perpetrators.

However, responsibility for the attacks has not been independently established, and no group has publicly claimed responsibility.

Years of insecurity in Oromia

Oromia, Ethiopia’s largest and most populous region, has experienced years of insecurity involving government forces and armed groups, including the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA).

Civilians have repeatedly been killed and displaced during the conflict, with competing accusations over responsibility for attacks.

Authorities have previously blamed the OLA for some killings. The group has denied involvement in attacks on civilians.
