South African Court Sentences Three to Life for Murder of British-South African Botanists

Durban, South Africa (Running Africa)— A South African court has sentenced three people to life imprisonment for the kidnapping, robbery and murder of renowned British-South African botanists Rachel Saunders and Rodney Saunders, bringing to a close one of the country’s most high-profile murder cases.

The Durban High Court imposed two life sentences each on Saffydeen Aslam del Vecchio (46), Fatima Patel (35) and Ahmad Mussa after finding them guilty of murdering Rachel Saunders, 64, and Rodney Saunders, 73.

The couple disappeared on 10 February 2018 while collecting indigenous plants and seeds in Ngoye Forest, approximately 150 kilometres north of Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal Province. Their bodies were later recovered from a nearby river.

Prosecutors said the three convicted individuals also robbed the couple, stealing personal belongings, including bank cards that were later used to make purchases in and around Durban following their disappearance.

Investigators revealed that approximately 734,000 rand (about $44,700) was withdrawn from the victims’ bank accounts after they were reported missing.

In addition to the life sentences for murder, the court handed each of the three offenders 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances and four years for theft. Del Vecchio also received an additional five-year sentence in connection with an unrelated criminal case.

Rachel and Rodney Saunders were well-known botanists and the owners of a Cape Town-based seed business, recognized for their work documenting and preserving southern Africa’s indigenous plant species.

The convictions conclude an investigation that spanned more than eight years and deliver long-awaited justice for the couple’s family, while highlighting South Africa’s continued efforts to prosecute serious violent crimes.
