Adamu, who has worked at the Confederation of African Football since 2018, is the first Nigerian to hold the post.
Samson Adamu has been appointed permanent general secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the first Nigerian to hold the position in the organization’s history.
How Samson Adamu was appointed
The appointment was confirmed on Nov. 1 after approval by CAF’s Executive Committee, ending an interim leadership period that began in March.
Adamu had stepped into the role following the departure of Véron Mosengo-Omba, who resigned after more than five years in office.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the organization ran a competitive selection process. The vacancy was advertised, and several applicants were interviewed before Adamu was confirmed.
What CAF’s general secretary does
As general secretary, Adamu will oversee CAF’s daily operations and coordinate the implementation of decisions and strategic priorities set by its leadership.
Adamu’s career at CAF
Adamu has worked in CAF’s administration since 2018. He began as director of competitions before becoming director of tournaments and events, a role that involved organizing major continental football events, including the Africa Cup of Nations.
He also holds a FIFA Master qualification in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, which he completed in 2009.
