Trump Agrees to Grant Visa to Mother of Ghanaian Teen Killed in New York Shooting, Mamdani Says

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says the president agreed to let Javits Frimpong’s mother travel from Ghana to mourn her 15-year-old son, who was shot dead in the Bronx.

President Donald Trump has agreed to grant a visa to the mother of Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old Ghanaian student killed in New York, so she can travel from Ghana and mourn her son in person, according to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Mamdani’s request to Trump

Mamdani announced the development on Oct. 31 after speaking with Trump by phone. He said the president had agreed to grant the visa immediately.

The mayor said no parent should have to endure the loss of a child from thousands of miles away.

What happened to Javits Frimpong

Frimpong was shot in the abdomen shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 29 while walking to school near Crotona Park in the Bronx. He later died at a hospital.

Police had made no arrests as of Nov. 1, according to the latest reports, and were searching for three teenage suspects. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Frimpong being chased shortly before the shooting, although authorities have not established a motive.

Frimpong’s father, Thomas, said his son had experienced bullying at school. He said the school principal had told him that two students were suspended for harassing the teenager.

Police have not confirmed whether the reported bullying was connected to the killing.

Vigil and Ghana’s response

Mourners gathered at a vigil in Frimpong’s memory to pray, light candles and pay tribute to the teenager. Members of the community remembered him and called for justice.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said Ghanaian officials in New York were coordinating with local authorities and helping the family with the visa process. He also pledged to work with United States authorities to pursue justice.
