Wildlife authorities are investigating what could be one of the region’s worst elephant mortality events in decades after preliminary findings pointed to possible poisoning.
Nairobi, Kenya (Running Africa) — Kenyan wildlife authorities are investigating the mysterious deaths of 14 elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem, after preliminary findings suggested the animals may have been poisoned by a toxic substance.
The elephants were discovered between 24 June and 24 July 2026 in what officials have described as the largest elephant mortality event recorded in the Amboseli region in decades.
The investigation is being led by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), which has launched laboratory testing to determine the source of the suspected toxin and establish the exact cause of death.
Preliminary Findings Point to Possible Toxin
According to KWS Head of Communications Duncan Juma, early investigations indicate that a toxic substance may have entered the ecosystem.
Officials said 10 of the elephants exhibited nearly identical symptoms before dying, including partial paralysis that left them unable to stand. The affected animals reportedly died within one to two days after showing signs of illness.
The remaining four elephant carcasses were either too badly decomposed or had been scavenged, preventing investigators from determining a definitive cause of death through field examinations.
Laboratory Tests Underway
Wildlife experts have collected tissue samples from the dead elephants and submitted them for laboratory analysis to confirm whether poisoning was responsible and to identify the specific toxin involved.
KWS said investigators are working to establish how the suspected contaminant entered the ecosystem and whether other wildlife species may also have been exposed.
Authorities emphasized that there is currently no evidence of any threat to human health, although investigations remain ongoing.
Deaths Occurred Outside Amboseli National Park
Officials confirmed that all 14 elephant deaths occurred outside Amboseli National Park, approximately 15 to 30 kilometers from the park’s boundary.
The Amboseli ecosystem is one of Africa’s most important elephant habitats, supporting one of Kenya’s largest free-ranging elephant populations and serving as a critical wildlife corridor connecting protected areas and surrounding community lands.
Conservationists Await Answers
The unexplained deaths have raised concerns among conservationists and wildlife experts, who warn that identifying the source of the suspected toxin will be essential to preventing further losses.
If confirmed, the incident would rank among the most significant elephant mortality events in the Amboseli ecosystem in recent decades, underscoring the ongoing environmental challenges facing one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife landscapes.
