Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (Running Africa) – At least 28 people were killed after a passenger bus plunged into a ravine in Ethiopia’s Amhara region on Monday, June 15, 2026, according to police reports carried by state-owned Amhara Media Corporation.
The bus was travelling from Dessie to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, when it veered off the road and crashed into a steep gorge. Authorities said several other passengers suffered injuries ranging from minor to critical and were rushed to nearby medical facilities.
The latest Ethiopia road accident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in the East African nation, where deadly crashes remain common due to poor road conditions, reckless driving, and aging vehicle fleets.
The tragedy follows another major transport disaster in 2024, when at least 71 people lost their lives after a truck carrying passengers plunged into a river in the southern Sidama region, one of the deadliest road accidents in Ethiopia’s recent history.
