Police have launched an attempted murder investigation after the Mamelodi Sundowns defender’s vehicle came under fire in Hillbrow.

Johannesburg, South Africa (Running Africa) — Zimbabwe international Divine Lunga escaped unharmed after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in Johannesburg on Sunday, prompting South African authorities to launch an attempted murder investigation.
The 31-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns defender was reportedly traveling to church with his younger brother when unknown assailants fired multiple shots at their vehicle in the inner-city suburb of Hillbrow.
According to local reports, investigators believe the attackers may have mistaken Lunga’s vehicle for that of an undercover police officer. Neither Lunga nor his brother sustained injuries during the incident.
A spokesperson for the South African Police Service, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, confirmed that an attempted murder case had been opened and that investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
Police have not announced any arrests, and authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack.
Zimbabwe’s national football team, popularly known as the Warriors, acknowledged the incident in a social media post featuring Lunga, accompanied by the message, “In God we trust.”

Lunga has been a regular figure for Zimbabwe in recent years and played an important role during the country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, while continuing to establish himself as one of the leading defenders in South African club football.
The shooting has once again drawn attention to South Africa’s ongoing struggle with violent crime, particularly in parts of Johannesburg, where armed attacks and shootings remain a persistent public safety concern.
Authorities have urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as detectives continue efforts to identify those responsible for the attack.
