Kapchorwa, Uganda (Running Africa) — The Ugandan government has suspended all school trips nationwide following a devastating school bus crash in Kapchorwa District that claimed the lives of 20 pupils and one adult, reigniting concerns over road safety and student transportation.
The fatal crash occurred on 17 July 2026 when a bus transporting pupils from King David Junior School overturned on Chekwatit Hill while returning from an educational excursion to the renowned Sipi Falls tourist destination in eastern Uganda.
Mechanical Fault Suspected in Deadly Crash
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver lost control of the bus, with authorities suspecting that a mechanical failure may have contributed to the tragedy.
In addition to the fatalities, dozens of pupils and school staff sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Emergency responders and local authorities worked through the aftermath as investigations into the cause of the crash continued.
Government Orders Nationwide Suspension of School Trips
In response to the disaster, Education Minister John Chrysostom Muyingo announced the temporary suspension of all school excursions and educational trips across Uganda.
The measure will remain in place while officials conduct a comprehensive investigation into the Kapchorwa crash and review existing safety regulations governing school transport.
Authorities are expected to assess vehicle roadworthiness, driver qualifications and operational standards before permitting schools to resume educational travel.
Crash Renews Calls for Stronger Road Safety Measures
The tragedy has once again highlighted Uganda’s persistent road safety challenges.
Road traffic accidents remain a major public safety concern, with speeding, poorly maintained vehicles, mechanical failures and hazardous road conditions contributing to thousands of deaths and injuries across the country each year.
The Kapchorwa bus crash has intensified calls for stricter enforcement of vehicle inspections, improved school transport standards and enhanced road safety measures to help prevent similar tragedies involving children in the future.
