Johannesburg, South Africa (Running Africa) — Senior South African police officer Maj.-Gen. Feroz Khan is recovering after surviving an apparent assassination attempt in Johannesburg, where gunmen opened fire on his vehicle, leaving him seriously injured and requiring emergency surgery.
The attack occurred on Sunday night, just days before Khan was scheduled to testify on 1 July before the Madlanga Commission, which is investigating allegations of corruption and organized crime infiltration within South Africa’s police service.
According to authorities, two suspects travelling in a white vehicle ambushed Khan as he drove home, firing multiple shots before fleeing the scene.
South African police have launched a high-level investigation involving specialized units, including the Political Killings Task Team, as detectives examine forensic evidence, ballistic reports, and CCTV footage to identify those responsible.
While the timing of the shooting has raised speculation, officials have urged the public not to draw conclusions linking the attack directly to the commission of inquiry, stressing that the motive remains under investigation.
Khan was arrested in May 2026 on allegations related to illegal gold dealing and has also been implicated in other corruption-related investigations. His suspension and pending testimony have placed him at the center of a broader probe into alleged criminal networks operating within South Africa’s law enforcement agencies.
The attempted killing has intensified concerns over corruption, organized crime, and the safety of key witnesses as South Africa continues efforts to address allegations of misconduct within its police leadership.
