ONDO, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has declared three days of national mourning after a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed in Ondo State, killing all 25 people aboard.
The Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 crashed near the naval base in Igbokoda on Monday while flying from Benin City to Lagos on a routine mission.
Air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft shortly after 9 a.m. Its wreckage was later located in a swampy area, with no survivors found.
Nigerian Air Force revises number aboard aircraft
Initial information from Nigerian officials indicated that 32 people were aboard the aircraft, including 25 passengers and seven crew members.
The Nigerian Air Force later revised the figure to 25, saying the aircraft was carrying 20 passengers and five crew members.
The identities of those killed are expected to be released after their families have been notified.
Tinubu ordered flags across Nigeria to be flown at half-mast during the three-day mourning period.
The president also directed the Nigerian Air Force to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

The crash is among Nigeria’s deadliest military aviation accidents in recent years.
The ATR-42 is used by the Nigerian Air Force for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, as well as transport operations.
Authorities have not yet announced what caused the aircraft to go down.
