Minna, Nigeria (Running Africa) — Protests erupted in Minna, Niger State, after 37 people detained during a crackdown on suspected illegal gold mining died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC).
Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets on Friday, demanding accountability, with some protesters attacking government facilities and damaging property. Security forces fired tear gas and live rounds as police and soldiers moved to disperse crowds. One person died during the unrest, according to Reuters.
37 Detainees Die in NSCDC Custody
The protests followed the deaths of 37 detainees arrested during NSCDC operations targeting suspected illegal mining in the Wushishi-Lukoto area on September 15 and 16.
The NSCDC initially suggested that a disease outbreak may have contributed to the deaths, but later said the cause had not been established.
Survivors have disputed the initial explanation and described severe overcrowding inside the detention facility.
Several survivors told Reuters that dozens of people were packed into a small cell and later struggled to breathe after an unidentified substance was allegedly sprayed inside. Reuters said it could not independently establish what the substance was or determine the cause of death.
Tinubu Orders Investigation Into Minna Custody Deaths
President Bola Tinubu ordered an investigation and said officials found responsible should face prosecution.
The Niger State NSCDC commandant was suspended following the deaths, alongside other personnel, pending investigations. The federal government has said the suspensions should not replace efforts to establish responsibility for what happened.
Families of some victims have also alleged mistreatment while the detainees were in custody, adding to calls for an independent and transparent investigation.
Curfew Imposed in Minna After Protests
Niger State authorities imposed a curfew in Minna after the demonstrations turned violent.
Security forces had restored order to much of the city by Friday evening, but questions remain over how the 37 detainees died and the conditions under which they were held.
The investigation is expected to examine the arrests, detention conditions, and circumstances surrounding the deaths as families continue to demand accountability.
