Casablanca, Morocco (Running Africa) — Morocco is accelerating construction of what is set to become the world’s largest football stadium, as the country prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
The ambitious Stade Hassan II, currently under construction in El Mansouria, approximately 38 kilometers north of Casablanca, will have a capacity of 115,000 spectators, making it the largest football stadium by seating capacity.
The landmark project forms a key part of Morocco’s preparations for the historic 2030 tournament and strengthens the country’s bid to host the FIFA World Cup final.
Stade Hassan II Inspired by Moroccan Heritage
Designed by internationally renowned architecture firm Populous in collaboration with Moroccan architects Oualalou + Choi, the stadium draws inspiration from the traditional Moroccan moussem, a cultural gathering that celebrates community, heritage, and hospitality.
Its signature design will feature a sweeping aluminum canopy, 32 monumental entrances, and five premium hospitality levels capable of accommodating approximately 12,000 VIP and hospitality guests.
More Than a Football Stadium
The 100-hectare sports and entertainment complex is being developed as a multi-purpose destination that extends far beyond football.
Plans include expansive public parks, sports facilities, landscaped gardens, recreational areas, and public spaces designed to serve local communities long after the World Cup concludes.
Officials say the project reflects Morocco’s broader vision of combining world-class sporting infrastructure with sustainable urban development and tourism growth.
Construction Targets 2027 Completion
Construction is already underway, with Moroccan authorities aiming to complete the stadium by the end of 2027, providing ample time for testing and operational readiness before the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The stadium is expected to become one of the tournament’s flagship venues and a symbol of Morocco’s growing investment in international sport and infrastructure.
Morocco Eyes Historic World Cup Final
Morocco is seeking to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup final, although FIFA has not yet announced whether the championship match will be played in Morocco or Spain.
