Meta Launches AI Academy Nigeria With $5,000 Funding for AI Startups

Lagos, Nigeria (Running Africa) — Meta has launched Meta AI Academy Nigeria, a national initiative designed to support Nigerian startups developing artificial intelligence solutions with funding, mentorship and access to international opportunities.

The program is being implemented in partnership with Nigeria’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program, the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN) as the country seeks to strengthen its rapidly developing AI and technology ecosystem.

Nigerian startups are being invited to submit their AI-powered innovations, with the strongest entries competing for cash funding, Meta advertising credits and an opportunity to represent Nigeria at an international AI competition in Istanbul.

Meta AI Academy Nigeria Opens Applications for AI Startups

The Meta AI Academy Nigeria is targeting emerging businesses using artificial intelligence to develop products and solve real-world problems.

Startups selected through the application process will have an opportunity to showcase their technologies and gain exposure to investors, industry leaders and the wider innovation community.

The initiative comes as interest in artificial intelligence in Nigeria continues to grow, with startups increasingly exploring AI applications across industries ranging from financial services and education to healthcare, agriculture and commerce.

Top 10 Nigerian AI Startups to Pitch at GITEX Nigeria

Following the selection process, the top 10 startups will be invited to pitch their solutions live at GITEX Nigeria on September 3, 2026.

The event will provide founders with an opportunity to present their businesses before a wider technology audience and demonstrate how their AI solutions could address challenges in Nigeria and beyond.

For early-stage companies, the competition could also provide valuable visibility as they seek investment, customers and partnerships.

Winning Startups to Receive $5,000 and Meta Support

Two startups will ultimately be selected as winners.

Each will receive $5,000 in cash funding, alongside Meta advertising credits and mentorship support designed to help founders develop and scale their businesses.

While the cash prize provides immediate financial support, the wider program is intended to give participating startups access to expertise and networks that could help them grow beyond the competition.

Nigeria Winners to Compete at Meta AI Summit in Istanbul

The two winning startups will also receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Istanbul, Türkiye, where they will represent Nigeria at Meta’s AI Summit in November 2026.

There, the Nigerian companies will compete alongside startups from Africa, the Middle East and Türkiye, giving them an opportunity to showcase their technology on a broader international platform.

The regional competition could provide Nigerian founders with exposure to new markets, potential investors and technology partners beyond West Africa.

Nigeria Pushes to Build Stronger Artificial Intelligence Ecosystem

Meta’s partnership with 3MTT, NCAIR and RAIN reflects wider efforts to develop Nigeria’s AI talent, startup ecosystem and digital economy.

With one of Africa’s largest populations and technology markets, Nigeria has emerged as a major hub for startups, particularly in fintech and other digital services.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming another area of focus as businesses and policymakers consider how the technology can support productivity, entrepreneurship and economic growth.

Program that combine funding with technical expertise and international exposure could help Nigerian founders turn early-stage AI projects into scalable businesses.

Meta AI Academy Targets Next Generation of Nigerian Startups

Through the Meta AI Academy Nigeria, participating startups will have an opportunity to move from a national pitching competition to an international stage within months.

For the two eventual winners, the package combines direct funding with advertising support, mentorship and participation in the Istanbul AI Summit.

More broadly, the program adds another platform for Nigerian entrepreneurs seeking to build businesses around one of the world’s fastest-developing technologies.

As competition to become a leading center for artificial intelligence in Africa intensifies, initiatives such as the Meta AI Academy could help give emerging Nigerian startups the resources and visibility needed to compete beyond the country’s borders.
