Mauritius Imposes Curfew After Police Shooting of Woman Sparks Protests

Authorities tighten security across 15 areas, including Port Louis, after the shooting of a 27-year-old woman triggers protests, road blockades, and calls for police accountability.

Port Louis, MAURITIUS — Mauritius has imposed an overnight curfew in several parts of the country following violent protests sparked by the shooting of a young woman allegedly by a police officer, an incident that has raised fresh concerns over police conduct and public accountability.

Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced the restrictions on Tuesday, ordering residents in 15 affected areas, including the capital, Port Louis, and other major population centers, to remain indoors between 8:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

The decision followed unrest in which protesters blocked roads and set tyres ablaze, prompting authorities to deploy security forces to restore order. Some schools were also closed as a precaution.

Police Shooting Sparks Anger in Mauritius

The protests were triggered by the shooting of 27-year-old Élodie Thomas, who was travelling home from work in Camp-Levieux on October 9 when the incident occurred.

Thomas sustained a gunshot wound and was subsequently taken to hospital, where doctors performed surgery to remove the bullet.

Health Minister Anil Bachoo confirmed that the operation was successful, offering some reassurance as public concern over the young woman’s condition continued to grow.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, with questions over how and why a police officer discharged his firearm.

Police Sergeant Faces Charges as Investigation Begins

A police sergeant has been provisionally charged in connection with the shooting, marking an early development in a case that has attracted public attention.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has also launched a separate investigation into the incident.

Authorities have yet to establish the full circumstances of the shooting or publicly determine responsibility.

The case has placed police accountability under scrutiny, particularly as the government’s response to the unrest unfolds alongside the investigation.

Mauritius Government Moves to Restore Calm

Prime Minister Ramgoolam has appealed for calm, assuring the public that the authorities will work to establish responsibility for the shooting.

The government has defended the need for security measures as officials seek to prevent further disturbances and restore normal activities in the affected communities.

The curfew, covering 15 areas, represents a significant security response in Mauritius, where widespread public disorder is relatively uncommon.

Rare Unrest Shakes Indian Ocean Island Nation

Mauritius, widely recognized as one of Africa’s major tourism destinations, has generally enjoyed a reputation for political stability and relative social calm.

The latest disturbances have therefore drawn attention beyond the communities directly affected, highlighting the challenge facing authorities as they seek to maintain public order while ensuring a credible investigation.

For the government, the immediate priority remains restoring calm. But the shooting of Thomas and the public reaction have also brought questions of police responsibility and public trust to the forefront.

With investigations continuing, attention will now turn to the findings of the Independent Police Complaints Commission and the legal proceedings involving the police sergeant.

For many following the case, the outcome will be an important test of how Mauritius balances law enforcement, accountability and the public’s demand for justice.
