Malawi has unveiled a $180 million digital transformation project in partnership with Huawei, aimed at strengthening the country’s ICT infrastructure, expanding digital connectivity, and modernizing public service delivery over the next four years.

The initiative was announced by Information and Communications Technology Minister Dr. Shadric Namalomba during an official visit to China, where discussions focused on advancing Malawi’s digital development agenda through strategic technology partnerships.

The Malawi digital transformation project is built around two major pillars designed to improve government efficiency and accelerate the country’s digital economy. The first pillar will establish a one-stop digital government platform, allowing citizens to access key public services, including passport applications, business registration, and tax payments, through a single online portal.

The second pillar focuses on deploying a high-speed national broadband network connecting all 28 districts across Malawi. The network will utilize advanced ring-protection technology to improve reliability and reduce service disruptions, ensuring more consistent internet and communications access nationwide.

Officials say the Huawei partnership will help drive e-government services, improve public sector efficiency, and increase access to essential government services, particularly in underserved areas. The project is also expected to strengthen Malawi’s digital infrastructure, support economic growth, and position the country as a growing player in Africa’s digital transformation movement.

The investment marks one of Malawi’s most ambitious technology modernization efforts to date, reflecting a broader push to leverage digital innovation to improve governance, connectivity, and service delivery across the country.
