Kitui County, Kenya (Running Africa) — Kenya’s push to build a digitally empowered workforce received a boost as 150 young people graduated from the SmartAcademy Digital Skills Training Program in Kitui County, a project aimed at equipping youth with practical skills for the country’s growing digital economy.
The initiative, led by the ICT Authority, was implemented in partnership with the Kitui County Government, SoftTech Technologies, and Meta through the Teki program.
The training focused on digital literacy, entrepreneurship, online business development, and the use of digital platforms to expand market access and create new economic opportunities. Organizers say the program is designed to help young people leverage technology to improve livelihoods and participate more effectively in Kenya’s digital transformation.
Graduates received certificates during a ceremony attended by Kitui Governor Julius Malombe, ICT Authority Director Lynette Ringeera, county officials, and stakeholders from the technology sector.
Several participants shared how they are already applying their newly acquired skills to support ventures ranging from livestock and poultry farming to small business management and community literacy projects. Among the graduates, Yvonne Kilonzo was recognized as the program’s top-performing trainee.
Officials said the initiative reflects broader efforts to bridge Kenya’s digital skills gap and prepare young people for emerging opportunities in technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship. By combining digital literacy with practical business skills, the program aims to strengthen economic inclusion and create pathways to sustainable employment.
As Kenya continues to invest in digital infrastructure and innovation, programs such as SmartAcademy are increasingly viewed as critical tools for empowering youth, fostering entrepreneurship, and driving long-term socio-economic development.
