Bologna, Italy (Running Africa) — Italian prosecutors have launched a manslaughter investigation following the death of Abderrahim Fakir, a Moroccan-born man who died after being restrained by police in the northern Italian city of Bologna, an incident that has sparked nationwide protests and renewed scrutiny of police conduct.

The investigation will examine the actions of the police officers involved, as well as the medical personnel who responded at the scene, authorities said.

Video Footage Under Investigation

Video circulating in Italian media appears to show two police officers restraining Fakir face down on the ground while he repeatedly pleaded with them to stop.

Prosecutors are reviewing the footage alongside witness testimony and forensic evidence to determine whether the restraint contributed to his death.

Witnesses told investigators that Fakir appeared to be in distress but was unarmed and did not pose a threat to members of the public at the time of the incident.

Death Triggers Protests in Bologna

Fakir’s death prompted thousands of demonstrators to take to the streets of Bologna, demanding accountability and an independent investigation.

While the majority of the demonstration remained peaceful, violence later broke out when a smaller group clashed with riot police.

Authorities said 64 police officers were injured during the unrest, while several protesters reportedly set two vehicles on fire and damaged public property.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for a comprehensive investigation into Fakir’s death, stressing that the circumstances surrounding the incident must be fully established.

At the same time, Meloni condemned attacks on law enforcement officers during the subsequent protests, urging demonstrators to express their concerns peacefully.
