Bamako, Mali (Running Africa) — Former Malian Prime Minister Moussa Mara has been released from prison after completing his sentence over a social media post that criticized the country’s military-led government, ending a case that drew widespread international condemnation and renewed concerns about freedom of expression in Mali.

Mara confirmed his release in a video shared on Facebook, marking the conclusion of a high-profile prosecution that became a symbol of the country’s shrinking political space under military rule.

His imprisonment attracted criticism from international human rights organizations and democracy advocates, who argued the case reflected increasing restrictions on political dissent.

Jailed Over Criticism of Military Authorities

The former prime minister was arrested in August 2025 after posting messages on social media expressing solidarity with detained opposition politicians and pro-democracy activists.

In October 2025, a Malian court convicted Mara of spreading false information and undermining the credibility of the state, sentencing him to two years in prison, with one year suspended.

The ruling sparked widespread concern among rights groups, which argued that the prosecution criminalized peaceful political expression. 

A Prominent Critic of Mali’s Military Government

Mara has been one of the country’s few senior political figures willing to publicly criticize the military-led transitional government headed by Colonel Assimi Goïta.

Goïta came to power following successive military coups in 2020 and 2021, after which Mali suspended constitutional rule and postponed a return to civilian governance.
