FIFA has banned Egypt coach Hossam Hassan for three matches and forward Mostafa Zico for five following their criticism of refereeing after the team’s World Cup defeat to Argentina.
Cairo, Egypt — FIFA has handed suspensions to Egypt national team coach Hossam Hassan, team director Ibrahim Hassan and forward Mostafa Zico following disciplinary proceedings linked to the country’s controversial defeat by Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) said Hossam Hassan and his twin brother Ibrahim Hassan received three-match suspensions each, while Zico was banned for five matches.
The sanctions follow comments made by members of the Egyptian camp after Argentina came from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2 in their World Cup round-of-16 encounter in Atlanta on July 7.
The EFA has requested FIFA’s detailed explanation for the disciplinary decisions and said it would consider an appeal after reviewing the legal grounds.
FIFA Hands Egypt Coach and Team Director Three-Match Bans
According to the Egyptian Football Association, Hossam Hassan and Ibrahim Hassan were each suspended for three matches following FIFA’s disciplinary proceedings.
Zico received a longer five-match ban after publicly criticising and insulting the match referee following Egypt’s elimination.
The football association has not confirmed whether it will challenge the sanctions.
It is awaiting FIFA’s written reasoning before deciding whether there are grounds to appeal.
The suspensions could affect Egypt’s preparations for upcoming international fixtures if they are upheld.
Egypt’s World Cup Defeat to Argentina Sparks Refereeing Dispute
The disciplinary case stems from Egypt’s 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
Egypt had taken a 2-0 lead before Argentina recovered to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
The Egyptian camp disputed several refereeing decisions during the match, including a disallowed goal involving Zico and a late penalty appeal.
Following the defeat, Hossam Hassan accused the match officials of unfairly denying Egypt a place in the next round.
Zico also criticised the referee in a post-match interview, using insulting language that subsequently became part of the disciplinary controversy.
The remarks drew attention from FIFA, which opened proceedings against the three members of Egypt’s delegation in August.
FIFA Defends Referees Following Egypt’s Allegations
FIFA’s head of refereeing, Pierluigi Collina, subsequently defended the match officials amid criticism from the Egyptian camp.
Collina warned that public allegations against referees could expose officials and their families to threats and intimidation.
The dispute has raised questions about the boundaries of public criticism of match officials and the disciplinary consequences facing coaches and players.
FIFA’s sanctions represent a significant setback for Egypt as the national team looks ahead to its next competitive fixtures.
Suspensions Could Affect Egypt’s AFCON Qualifiers
If the three-match suspensions are upheld, Hossam Hassan and Ibrahim Hassan could miss Egypt’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures, including the November matches against Malawi and another match scheduled during the March international window.
Zico’s five-match suspension could keep him unavailable for national team selection until June, depending on which fixtures count towards the ban.
The Egyptian Football Association is expected to determine its next steps after receiving FIFA’s full disciplinary findings.
For now, the sanctions leave Egypt facing uncertainty over the availability of its head coach, team director and one of its attacking players.
