Accra, Ghana (Running Africa) — One of Africa’s most celebrated cultural festivals is back as the Chale Wote Street Art Festival 2026 takes over Accra from August 10 to 16, bringing a week of art, music, film, performance, and cultural expression to the Ghanaian capital.
Held across Nationalism Park and Black Star Square, this year’s festival is themed “Carnival of the Black Sun,” a bold exploration of liberation, identity, collective memory, and the African experience.
Since its launch more than a decade ago, Chale Wote has evolved from a grassroots street art movement into an internationally recognized celebration of African creativity, attracting artists and visitors from Ghana, across the continent, and the global diaspora.
From Accra’s Streets to a Global Cultural Festival
Founded in 2011 by Accra Dot Alt Radio, Chale Wote was created as a platform to bring art out of traditional galleries and directly into public spaces.
The festival has since become one of Ghana’s most recognizable arts and cultural events, transforming Accra’s historic neighborhoods and public spaces into open-air galleries, performance stages, and community gathering points.
Artists, filmmakers, musicians, dancers, designers, and other creatives use the festival to showcase work that explores African identity, history, politics, and contemporary culture.
‘Carnival of the Black Sun’ Takes Center Stage
The 2026 Chale Wote theme, “Carnival of the Black Sun,” places questions of liberation, identity, and collective memory at the heart of this year’s programming.
The festival opens on August 10 with the All White Day of ReMembering procession, one of the week’s major cultural events.
Throughout the festival, visitors can participate in artist lab sessions, workshops, film salons, and creative conversations, offering opportunities to engage directly with artists and explore the ideas behind their work.
Shika Shika Art Fair Returns
The Shika Shika Art Fair will also run daily throughout Chale Wote 2026, providing a dedicated marketplace for visual artists and collectors.
Visitors will have an opportunity to view and purchase original artwork while connecting directly with artists participating in the festival.
The marketplace forms part of Chale Wote’s broader mission to create sustainable opportunities for African creatives while making contemporary art more accessible to the public.
Is Chale Wote 2026 Free?
Entry to Chale Wote Street Art Festival activities is free, continuing the festival’s commitment to making art and cultural experiences accessible to the wider community.
Visitors accessing Nationalism Park, however, will be required to pay the venue’s standard entrance fee:
- Adults: GHC 20
- Students: GHC 10
- Children under 12: GHC 5
With a week of exhibitions, performances, films, workshops, and public installations planned across Accra, Chale Wote 2026 once again places Ghana at the center of conversations around contemporary African art and culture.
