A Nigerian court has heard that the driver lost control of the vehicle while trying to pass another truck, killing two members of Joshua’s team.

Ogun State, Nigeria (Running Africa) — The driver carrying British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua was attempting to overtake another vehicle shortly before a crash that killed two members of the former heavyweight champion’s team, a Nigerian court has heard.

The fatal accident happened in Ogun State last December while Joshua and members of his team were traveling to visit his father.

Joshua survived, but his personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, were killed.

Prosecutors Detail Anthony Joshua Crash

Prosecutors allege that driver Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode was attempting to overtake a moving truck when he lost control of the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his team.

The vehicle then crashed into a parked lorry, according to the prosecution’s account presented in court.

Kayode faces charges including causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid national license. He has pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

Lorry Driver Also Pleads Not Guilty

The driver of the parked lorry, Abubakar Adamu, has also been charged in connection with the case.

Adamu pleaded not guilty to a charge of obstructing traffic.

The court heard that both vehicles involved in the accident had been moved from their original positions before investigators arrived at the crash scene, a detail that could be considered as evidence during proceedings.

Police have also not yet taken a statement from Joshua, according to evidence presented to the court.

Anthony Joshua Crash Case Adjourned

The case has been adjourned until September 10, when proceedings are expected to continue.

The crash drew significant attention in Nigeria and internationally because of Joshua’s prominence in heavyweight boxing and his strong ties to Nigeria.

As the court case continues, the allegations against both drivers remain subject to judicial determination. Neither defendant has been convicted of the charges they face.
