The Minnesota Democrat says safety concerns and threats against her family have made it impossible to remain at the Washington residence searched by federal agents.
Washington, United States — Somali-born US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar says she plans to leave her home in Washington, DC, following a federal search of the property earlier this month, citing concerns about her safety and that of her family.
Omar told MS NOW that the October 12 search had exposed her residential address at a time when she continues to receive death threats.
The Minnesota Democrat said she no longer considers it safe for her children and other family members to visit the property.
Her decision follows a search by federal agents as part of an ongoing investigation. Authorities have not filed criminal charges against the congresswoman.
Federal Agents Search Ilhan Omar’s Washington Residence
Agents from Homeland Security Investigations searched Omar’s Washington home on October 12 under a judicially authorised warrant, according to the US Justice Department.
The department said the operation was connected to an ongoing federal investigation and that agents acted in accordance with court orders and legal requirements.
The investigation reportedly concerns allegations related to Omar’s immigration history, including documents submitted by her late father when she was a child.
Omar has repeatedly denied allegations of immigration fraud.
No charges have been filed against her, and the existence of an investigation does not establish wrongdoing.
Ilhan Omar Raises Concerns Over Family Safety
Speaking to MS NOW, Omar said the publicity surrounding the search had made her home address widely known.
She expressed concern that remaining at the property could expose her family to additional security risks, particularly given the death threats she says she continues to receive.
Omar was born in Somalia and fled the country with her family during her childhood.
She spent several years in a refugee camp in Kenya before resettling in the United States, where she became a citizen in 2000.
Her background as a former refugee has remained a prominent part of her political career and public profile.
Omar Accuses Trump Administration of Political Targeting
Omar has accused President Donald Trump’s administration of using federal law enforcement agencies against political opponents.
The Justice Department has rejected allegations that agents acted unlawfully during the search, maintaining that the operation followed judicial authorisation and applicable legal procedures.
The competing accounts come amid heightened political tensions ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections.
Omar is seeking a fifth term in the House of Representatives, where she represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.
The search took place three weeks before the election, bringing renewed attention to the investigation and Omar’s concerns about her personal security.
Federal authorities have not announced charges against the congresswoman, and the investigation remains ongoing.
