Arusha, Tanzania (Running Africa) — Tanzanian authorities have detained three game rangers from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area following the death of a 25-year-old man and the hospitalization of another after they were stopped inside the protected area.

The men were traveling by motorcycle from Arusha to Babati on Wednesday to attend a funeral when they reportedly took a wrong turn and entered the conservation area.

Police said rangers intercepted them for allegedly entering Ngorongoro without following required procedures and for using a motorcycle in an area where such vehicles are prohibited.

One of the men, Sefu Mussa, later died after being taken to Karatu Lutheran Hospital, while Salimu Haji remains in critical condition. A third man, Abdallah Nuru, managed to return to Arusha.

Three Rangers Detained as Tanzania Police Investigate Death

Tanzanian police have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mussa’s death and are questioning the three rangers involved in the incident.

Authorities have not yet announced the findings of the investigation or established the cause of Mussa’s death.

The rangers’ detention comes after serious allegations were made about how the three men were treated following their interception inside the conservation area.

Survivor Alleges Severe Beatings Inside Ngorongoro

Nuru has alleged that the rangers accused the group of poaching and subjected them to severe physical abuse while they were in custody.

According to his account, the men were beaten and forced onto sharp acacia thorns, causing them to lose consciousness.

Nuru said Mussa later died while being transported to the hospital, while Haji suffered serious injuries and remains under medical care.

The allegations have not yet been established by investigators, and authorities have not announced charges against the detained rangers.

Men Reportedly Entered Protected Area After Wrong Turn

The three men were reportedly traveling to Babati for a funeral when they mistakenly entered the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Police said they were stopped because they had allegedly failed to follow the procedures required to enter the protected area and were traveling on a prohibited motorcycle.

What began as an alleged conservation-area violation has now become the subject of a police investigation following Mussa’s death and the serious injuries reportedly suffered by Haji.

Ngorongoro Incident Renews Scrutiny of Ranger Conduct

The case has renewed scrutiny of law enforcement and conservation practices in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area, one of the country’s most internationally recognized wildlife and tourism destinations.
