Cape Verde Receives Hero’s Welcome After Historic FIFA World Cup 2026 Campaign

Praia, Cape Verde (Running Africa) — Tens of thousands of jubilant supporters lined the streets of Praia on Sunday as Cape Verde’s national football team returned home to a heroes’ welcome following the country’s historic debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The celebrations coincided with Cape Verde’s 51st Independence Day, creating a rare double celebration as fans gathered at Nelson Mandela International Airport before escorting the Blue Sharks through the capital in a festive parade marked by music, dancing and a sea of national flags.

Making their first-ever appearance at football’s biggest tournament, Cape Verde exceeded expectations with a series of impressive performances that captured global attention. Ranked 67th in the FIFA World Rankings and representing a nation of just over 525,000 people, the Blue Sharks emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest surprise packages.

Cape Verde announced their arrival on the world stage by holding reigning European champions Spain to a goalless draw in their opening match before producing another memorable performance in a thrilling 2-2 draw against two-time world champions Uruguay.

Their remarkable journey eventually came to an end in the Round of 16, where they were defeated by defending world champions Argentina, capping off what has been widely regarded as one of the most inspiring campaigns of the tournament.

Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha became one of the breakout stars of the World Cup after delivering a string of outstanding performances, including a commanding display against Spain that earned widespread international praise.

“We wanted to achieve something special,” Vozinha said upon the team’s return. “We may not have won the World Cup, but we made our people proud. Now it’s time to celebrate together.”

The Blue Sharks’ achievements have been celebrated across Africa and beyond, with their fearless performances showcasing the growing strength of African football on the global stage.

Although their World Cup journey ended before the quarter-finals, Cape Verde leaves the tournament with its reputation transformed. The island nation not only inspired millions with its resilience and determination but also demonstrated that emerging football nations can compete with the world’s elite.

For Cape Verde, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be remembered as the tournament that elevated the Blue Sharks from underdogs to national icons, creating a legacy that is expected to inspire future generations of footballers across the archipelago.
