Kigali, Rwanda — Formula 1 is set to return to Africa after reaching a 10-year agreement with Rwanda to host an African Grand Prix from the early 2030s, ending a decades-long absence of the sport from the continent.
Under the agreement, Rwanda would become the first African country to host a Formula 1 race since the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami in 1993.
The exact date of the inaugural race has not yet been announced.
Rwanda plans new Formula 1 circuit in Bugesera
Rwanda plans to construct a new racing circuit in Bugesera district, approximately 40 kilometers south of the capital, Kigali.
The proposed venue will be developed to FIA Grade 1 standards, the highest classification required for hosting Formula 1 races.
The circuit will form a central part of Rwanda’s efforts to establish itself as a destination for international motorsport.
Further details about the construction timeline, project costs and circuit specifications have yet to be announced.
African Grand Prix marks planned return after more than three decades
Africa last hosted a Formula 1 World Championship race in 1993, when the South African Grand Prix took place at the Kyalami circuit.
Rwanda’s agreement would bring the championship back to the continent after more than three decades without an African race.
Formula 1 estimates that Africa has more than 100 million fans, reflecting the continent’s importance to the sport’s international audience.
The proposed African Grand Prix would add another continent to the championship’s race calendar.
Rwanda strengthens ambitions to host major sporting events
Rwanda has pursued an opportunity to host Formula 1 since President Paul Kagame publicly announced the country’s interest in 2024.
The agreement marks a significant step in those efforts and adds to Rwanda’s ambitions to attract major international sporting events.
Attention will now turn to the development of the Bugesera circuit and the preparations required to meet Formula 1’s technical and operational standards.
Formula 1 and Rwandan authorities are expected to announce further details, including the construction schedule and date of the first race, at a later stage.
