Uganda has pulled out of the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, only two months after confirming its participation, citing concerns over how the decision could be perceived internationally.
Kampala, Uganda (Running Africa) — Uganda has withdrawn from the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, with military chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba saying the country’s participation could be interpreted as taking a position against King Charles III.
The announcement comes two months after Uganda confirmed plans to send a team to the international sporting competition for wounded, injured, and sick military personnel and veterans.

Kainerugaba announced Uganda’s decision to pull out of the Birmingham Games amid renewed attention on Prince Harry’s relationship with the British royal family.
The Duke of Sussex founded the Invictus Games in 2014, establishing the competition to support the rehabilitation and recovery of wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans through sport.
Uganda has not explicitly said its withdrawal was caused by the tensions involving Harry and the Royal Family.
However, Kainerugaba’s comments directly linked the decision to concerns about how Uganda’s participation could be interpreted in relation to King Charles.
