OUAGADOUGOU (Running Africa) — China issued more than 8,000 visas to Burkina Faso citizens in 2025, highlighting growing economic, educational, and technical exchanges as the two countries deepen cooperation in trade, industrialization, and technology transfer.
Chinese Ambassador Zhao Deyong disclosed the figure following talks with Burkina Faso Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo on September 7.
The visas covered business travel, studies, professional assignments, and training programs in China, reflecting expanding ties between Beijing and Ouagadougou.
Burkina Faso Pushes for Technology Transfer and Local Production
Burkina Faso is seeking to reshape its cooperation with China around greater economic self-reliance and domestic production.
During the talks, Ouédraogo called for Chinese cooperation to focus increasingly on industrial equipment, technology transfer, skills development, and the establishment of local production facilities.
The government wants to strengthen agricultural and industrial mechanization, process more raw materials domestically, and gradually reduce dependence on imported goods.
China has indicated support for Burkina Faso’s development priorities, with Zhao saying Beijing is prepared to help the country pursue a development model suited to its national circumstances.
China-Burkina Faso Trade Surpasses $1 Billion
Economic relations between the two countries have expanded significantly since diplomatic ties were restored in 2018.
According to the Chinese embassy, bilateral trade exceeded $1 billion in 2025, up 47.7% year-on-year and more than triple its 2018 level. China has also become Burkina Faso’s largest source of imports and a major trading partner.
The relationship was elevated to a strategic partnership in 2024.
Cooperation now extends across agriculture, healthcare, defense, and technology infrastructure. China has also supported major projects, including the Pala University Hospital Center in Bobo-Dioulasso, inaugurated in December 2025.
Education and Skills Exchanges Expand
Education and professional training are becoming another major pillar of the relationship.
More than 200 Burkinabè students have received Chinese government scholarships since diplomatic relations resumed, while nearly 800 people traveled to China for a training program in 2025.
For Burkina Faso, the expanding partnership is increasingly focused on turning foreign cooperation into domestic productive capacity.
The challenge now will be ensuring that growing trade, investment, and movement between the two countries translate into sustainable industries, skills, and jobs at home.
