Zanzibar, Tanzania (Running Africa) — Tanzania’s First Gentleman Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving treatment for a heart condition in Zanzibar.

Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced that Hassan died on Monday morning at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan Made History as Tanzania’s First First Gentleman

Hassan became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman in 2021 when Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed the presidency following the death of President John Magufuli.

Samia’s accession made her Tanzania’s first female president and, in turn, placed Hassan in the unprecedented role of First Gentleman.

Despite his historic position, Hassan largely stayed away from the political spotlight and maintained a private public profile throughout his wife’s presidency.

Career in Agriculture and Academia

Before Samia became president, Hassan built a career in agriculture, public service, and academia.

He worked as a civil servant and later as a lecturer at Kizimbani Agricultural College, reflecting a professional life largely separate from his wife’s political career.

Hassan and Samia married in 1978 and had four children — three sons and a daughter, according to Tanzania’s official presidential biography.

Kenyan President William Ruto and Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema were among those who expressed condolences following the announcement.
