DR Congo Mourns Legendary Rumba Saxophonist Mekanisi Modero

The longtime Afrisa International musician helped shape the golden era of Congolese rumba.

Kinshasa, DR Congo (Running Africa) — The Democratic Republic of Congo is mourning the loss of legendary saxophonist Mekanisi Modero, a towering figure in Congolese rumba whose music helped shape one of Africa’s most celebrated musical eras.

Born Mekanisi Zemba Bagwisa in Kikwit in 1944, Modero died in the United States, where he had lived for more than four decades. His death was confirmed by former Afrisa International guitarist Dino Vangu. The cause of death has not been made public.

Modero rose to prominence after being discovered by Congolese music icon Tabu Ley Rochereau, joining the legendary Afrisa International Orchestra in 1970. As one of the band’s signature saxophonists, he became renowned for his distinctive sound, while also serving as the orchestra’s master of ceremonies, manager, and songwriter. His contributions played a pivotal role in Afrisa International’s emergence as one of the most influential bands in African music history.

In 1984, Modero travelled to the United States with Afrisa International before settling in Washington, D.C. There, he remained an active ambassador of Congolese rumba, performing alongside fellow musicians including Dodo Munoko and Huit Kilo and helping preserve the genre among African diaspora communities.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest Congolese saxophonists of his generation, Modero’s influence extended far beyond the stage. His artistry helped define the golden age of Congolese rumba, inspiring generations of musicians and cementing his place among the continent’s most respected cultural icons.

His passing marks the end of an era, but his enduring musical legacy will continue to resonate across Africa and beyond.
