Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Accuses Lagos Hospital of Obstructing Probe Into Son’s Death

The author has gone public with allegations of negligence, months after the death of her 21-month-old son.

Lagos, Nigeria (Running Africa) – Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos of attempting to frustrate a coroner’s inquest into the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, reigniting concerns over medical negligence and accountability in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

In a letter published on her social media platforms on Saturday, Adichie alleged that complications arose during sedation for an MRI procedure at the Lagos hospital on January 7, 2026. She claimed that Euracare’s Medical Director initially acknowledged that the anesthesiologist involved had failed to meet the expected standard of care before the hospital later reversed its position.

The award-winning novelist further alleged that the hospital withheld complete medical records and questioned the cause of death listed on her son’s death certificate.

The case has attracted scrutiny from Nigerian medical regulators. The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria suspended three medical officials, including anesthesiologist Dr. Titus Ogundare, after finding a prima facie case of negligence.

A coroner’s inquest into the child’s death commenced in April but was halted on May 26 after the Lagos High Court granted Euracare a stay of proceedings pending the outcome of a judicial review application.

The matter has been adjourned until October 8, while Euracare has denied all allegations of wrongdoing.

Despite the legal setback, Adichie vowed to continue pursuing accountability.

“Our quest for justice will continue,” she wrote.
